Vanilla & Cardamom Poached Pears

Pressure Cooker or Slow Cooker

Tender pears infused with warm cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, and fresh orange. Serve warm or at room temperature with ice cream or fresh homemade whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 8 small pears
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla paste
  • ½ tsp ground cardamom
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Juice of 1 large orange
  • ½ cup water
  • Ice cream of choice or fresh homemade whipped cream, for serving

Cardamom Note

If using whole cardamom pods instead of ground cardamom, 2–3 whole pods equal approximately ⅓–½ tsp ground cardamom. Lightly crush the pods to help release their flavor and remove them before serving.

Directions

  1. Leaving the stems intact, use the Pepper Corer to remove the cores from the bottom of the pears.
  2. Arrange the pears upright in the inner pot of your pressure cooker or slow cooker.
  3. Combine the maple syrup, vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, orange juice, and water. Stir to combine, then pour the mixture over and around the pears.

Pressure Cooker

Cook on HIGH pressure for 10 minutes. Carefully release the pressure according to your pressure cooker’s instructions.

Slow Cooker

Cook on LOW for 3–4 hours, or up to 5 hours if you prefer the pears even more tender.

To Serve

Serve the pears warm or at room temperature, spooning some of the fragrant spiced cooking liquid over the top. Add a scoop of your favorite ice cream or fresh homemade whipped cream.

Make It Your Own

Try swapping the ice cream flavor, adding a little orange zest, or changing up the warm spices. And if whipped cream is involved, I’m not going to be the person who tells you how much is too much.
