Salisbury Steak

Classic comfort food without making dinner an all-day project. Tender beef patties cook in a savory mushroom and onion gravy, and the whole thing is ready in about 30 minutes.

Watch Me Make It

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 pkg Meatloaf Meal Mix
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 8 oz. whole mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ small onion, diced
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp barbecue sauce

Instructions

  1. Combine the ground beef, eggs, and Meatloaf Meal Mix. Mix until combined, then shape into 8 oval patties.
  2. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Add the patties and sear for 2–3 minutes per side. They will shrink as they cook. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
  4. Add the sliced mushrooms, onion, salt, and pepper to the same pan. Cook for about 4–5 minutes, until the mushrooms begin to brown.
  5. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and barbecue sauce. Whisk until combined.
  7. Return the patties and any accumulated juices to the pan. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 15 minutes, flipping the patties halfway through. Cook until the patties reach 165°F.
  8. Serve with mashed potatoes and your favorite green vegetable, and spoon plenty of that gravy over the top.

Mushroom Tip

It might seem easier to grab a package of pre-sliced mushrooms, but buy them whole and slice them yourself. Whole mushrooms generally stay fresher and hold up better, and you get to control the thickness of the slices. For Salisbury steak, that means mushrooms that cook and brown nicely instead of thin little slices that disappear into the gravy.

Make It Your Own

Not a mushroom person? Leave them out. The gravy will still give you plenty of flavor. Serve the Salisbury steak over mashed potatoes, noodles, or whatever sounds good to you.
